Energy

Find the best energy deal
in the Netherlands.

I compare electricity and gas providers so you don't have to read Dutch fine print. Prices checked every month.

What you need to arrange

  1. 1

Check if your rental includes energy

Many Dutch rentals include energy in the rent (gestoffeerd or gemeubileerd). Check your rental contract before signing up for energy. If energy is included, skip this page.

  2. 2

    Get your BSN first

You need a BSN (citizen service number) to sign an energy contract in your own name. Register at your local gemeente first. Without a BSN, most energy providers cannot process your application.

  3. 3

    Know your usage type

Most Dutch homes have both gas and electricity. Newer apartments (especially post-2020) may be all-electric, with no gas connection. Check with your landlord before choosing a combined gas and electricity plan.

  4. 4

    Choose a fixed contract

For expats, a fixed 1-year contract is almost always the best choice. Prices are predictable and you're protected from market fluctuations. Variable contracts can spike unexpectedly.

  5. 5

    Switch freely at contract end

In the Netherlands you can switch energy providers without interruption, similar to the internet overstapservice. Your new provider handles everything. No downtime.

Based on average Dutch household usage (2,400 kWh electricity + 1,000 m³ gas), monthly energy costs typically range between €150–€200/month with a fixed contract. Your actual cost depends on your usage and home size.

Prices were last verified in May 2026. Energy tariffs change regularly, so treat these as a guide and confirm the current rate on the provider's website before signing up.
